When cavities have damaged your teeth, our dentists can relieve your pain with fillings. Fillings are a simple, routine restoration used to repair minor or moderate tooth damage in one appointment. Modern local anaesthetics ensure minimal discomfort for the patient.
Once your tooth is numb, your dentist will remove the damaged section and clean the tooth before applying the filling material. After shaping and curing it, the dentist will polish your filling for a smooth finish.
There are two types of fillings available at Rightwell East Dental Practice — amalgam and composite.
The most common and cost-effective filling material, amalgam is a special alloy incorporating metals like mercury, copper, and zinc. It is one of the most durable materials available and is typically used to fill premolars and molars toward the back of the mouth due to its silver colour and durability. The trace amount of mercury in amalgam fillings is safe because it is combined with other materials.
Also known as “white fillings,” composite fillings use a tooth-coloured mixture of powdered glass and acrylic resin. Composite fillings provide a more natural-looking solution to cavity repair. Because composite resin bonds easily with the surrounding tooth structure, less preparation is required, more of your natural tooth is preserved, and you spend less time in the dental chair.
